I have encountered a peculiar problem with my sony a7mk3 after the latest firmware update to version 4.02
The problem is in focus button, while trigger is on with off camera flash. The focus button doesn't lock after half press and after sometime the photo gets captured, but in the display the focus area becomes green although the button doesn't lock in half press and it feels soft .But without the trigger the focus button is like normal half press it gets the focus locked and then full press to capture the image.
Kindly share your thoughts on this
Regards

Which Focus Mode are you using?

Sony cameras can operate in:
  • MF = manual focus - focus is up to you
  • AF-S = auto-focus-single = focus when you half-press, then stop - I think that is what you were expecting
  • AF-C = auto-focus-continuous = continually focus - this is the most common choice on a Sony camera
  • DMF = directed manual focus = do an AF-S followed by manual focus
There are a couple of others, but these are the common ones. The A7RIII has AF-A, but I'd recommend sticking to AF-S and AF-C.

But then we get to complications....

Sony supports a variety of Focus Areas - these control what part of the viewfinder is considered for auto-focus / how selective you can be about where you are focusing.

You can choose to focus with or without tracking - with tracking the camera will attempt to follow what you have focussed on. Without tracking it runs a fresh AF each time. Were you expecting tracking? If that's it, you may need to check the focus area you are using - you need to use a tracking focus area - there's a tracking version of each focus area.

On your A7RIII that's most of the AF details. Things got a lot more complicated in the next couple of generations. I think the A7RIII had an early version of human eye AF. It got better in the next several models, and added animal, bird, and other eye AF. Then the A7RV introduced the AI chip and Subject Recognition - life got interesting :-D
