What fantastic technology!

In all honesty, it wouldn't surprise me to find they have a camera planned with a sensor in that range and don't want to detract from it with the older tech. I'm still looking for the A9III to be in the 35-40 MP range. That keeps it far enough from the A1.

Or maybe they don't want it encroaching on the 7C series.

For the A9iii I am still thinking that it will be 33mp (75%) or 24mp (25%). So basically keep it matching the A7 line amount or it will just always be 24mp.

The market is so spread out with regard to MP and speed cameras nowadays it's crazy. Now that MP doesn't seem to be a limitation 45 and 50 is no problem. To be perfectly honest, I too think it'll end up around 24MP. I just keep hoping that if I say it often enough... :p

I can not see Sony staying at 24mp they did that last time around so think I think some increase is well over due

If it were a general purpose camera like the A7IV, for example, then yes, an increase might be normal, but this is a specialist FAST camera, catering for a subset of the market. A market which seems to be fairly uninterested in massive pixel counts, as far as I can see. In fact, they can find increased pixel count something if a liability.

I expect It to stay 24Mp, but increase speed substantially - that will make the A9 vs A1 distinction clear. Want speed above all? Go A9. Want speed and resolution? Go A1.

I see the A9’s target market being the kind of shooters who used to buy the Canon 1D cameras. These were comparatively low res bodies with high frame rates (for the time - 10fps mechanical on the 1D mark III in 2007).
