Male Great Horned Owl - this owl has always made it darn near impossible to photograph, he's perched deep in the evergreens during the day. Camera: Sony Alpha 1 Feb 13, 2024 SW Florida.

Hi Kevin, nice photograph. I am not sure if you are aware, but you can upload a full size image rather than a thumb nail if you want to. The option is available when you select 'Insert', you get the option for 'Full image', you then select that and you get the full sized image inserted rather than the thumb nail.

Thanks. I was wondering how to do that.

I've made the change

I spotted Cardinal and after I took the first few shots from a distance he flew nearer and began following me.

My son said he looks like Red from Angry Birds.

Most of us would be delighted to have a Belted Kingfisher big enough in the photo to identify the bird.
Oops! Sorry, yes, I had meant to state that this was a male Belted Kingfisher but clearly that slipped my mind..... Usually I do identify the bird when I'm posting an image which shows all of him or her..

In my neighborhood (we're on a small lake) we are fortunate enough to have both a female Belted KF and a male Belted KF. I've never seen them together, though! I keep waiting hopefully for the day when I look out and there they are, both standing on the posts on our pier.....that really would be a delight!

I was rather surprised today when I looked out and saw a gull on the lake. Usually they fly around here, but this is the first time I've actually seen one in the water. He' (or she?) is a Ring-billed Gull, fairly common around this area.

Well nice shot but for sure at that shutter speed camera on tripod and a very tolerant kingfisher, these are usually blue streaks if they see you
Camera was hand held. The bird just sat there so I kept lowering the shutter speed to see how low I could go in th hope of lowering the ISO

Well that works as well I have handheld down to similar speeds but not often

With my 70-200 f2.8 mkii I can go down to 1/15 at 200mm. I believe the IBIS is even better on the A7RV and A9MKIII. I did buy a Nikon Z8 and took a few sharp images at 35mm and one second. There were many things I LOVED about the Z8 but the AF would occasionally let me down so I sold it and got the A1. Should have done that in the first place.

Good to know since I have the same set-up! I'll have to skip my morning coffee to test it out first. :)

That kingfisher is beautiful, and the shot is excellent! They definitely are speedy little devils and it's hard to catch one in flight -- I have yet to be able t to do that. I am lucky that my deck isn't very far from the community's pier on our small lake and am in prime position for seeing when the Kingfishers, Green Heron Night Heron or the GBH decide to spend some time hanging out on the pier and its posts and chains.

That's when I reach into the cabinet and grab my A1 with the 200-600mm already mounted (usually with 1.4x TC as well), ready to get whatever shots I can. I tend to keep my shutter speed pretty high when shooting any of them, figuring that they're likely to take off in flight at any second and I want to be prepared for that, even though the higher shutter speeds are not necessary when the bird is just perched or standing there, not moving much. The herons seem to be leisurely about their movements, truly just hanging out, but the KFs are usually twitchy and moving around quite a bit, when perched even if it's only their heads, while on a post or chain. Lots of nervous energy there!

I love the 200-600mm but, yes, it's heavy and a bit awkward to handle, so I cannot easily walk around with it. I use it primarily for shooting the birds in and around the water from my deck. Sometimes I grab the tripod and set it up on the deck but more often I do hand-hold the thing for brief periods since I can rest my elbows on the deck railings.

In the warmer weather when I'm out walking around the neighborhood, on the boardwalk or going somewhere else for a day or afternoon photo excursion, that's when the 100-400mm with or without 1.4x TC really shines. She hops on the A1, the 200-600mm enjoys some relaxing time in the cabinet and away we go...... That 100-400mm lens and A1 combo are much more hand-holdable for me and that makes all the difference when going out-and-about. Also the 100-400mm fits into a (large) camera bag more easily, too!

Bald Eagle - The endangered species success story!
In 1963 researchers estimated there were just 400 pairs of bald eagles in the US. Thanks to years of protection and a complete ban on the insecticide ‘DDT’, there are now more than 300,000 bald eagles in the lower 48 states, and the species is no longer endangered. Camera: Sony Alpha 1. Images captured on Feb. 17, 2024 in SW Florida.

Purple Finch's have pretty purple plumage. Can you say that ten times, fast? Photoshop AI is amazing because I utilized it to remove two branches in these two images that were in front of this bird. In the first image it's noticeable in the bottom left wing feather tips where it generated the image. In the second image, I can't tell at all where they were.

There I was laying on the beach shooting these Western Sandpipers and they suddenly take off, then I hear "Are you OK, Are you OK" The person had run about 50 yards across all the logs and loose sand and was winded. Right then I knew why they took off.

Well, I guess you can't argue the intent!

I didn't argue about it,I understood that someone laying still for a long time someone is going to ask questions. We had a chat and a few laughs about it. It's nice to know somebody still cares about someone else. I shared some shots that I took.
