They are fast, and stupid. It's why so many people have phobias of them, because they are in most homes and gardens and are probably the first spider we encounter in our lives. They run at you because they can't see well. I really don't like them either. Thankfully I have so many false widows and cellar spiders here that most house spiders stay away or die. Those that do get in die by the paw
