Birds Birds Non-BIF Thread - Post Your Shots Here

While out twitching a rare visiting Hoopoe today, we walked around a corner and spotted this stunning chap just chilling on the cliff barrier rope. Perfect light, perfect moment. Eurasion Sparrowhawk.View attachment 37988

For me, one of the oddes looking local birds is the Black Oystercatcher. What's with that orange bill?

A Red Wattlebird. These are particularly noisy at 5:30am, so I’ve a good mind to head down to the bush at 10pm with a marching band in toe.

First came across this bird about 5 years ago and have been chasing it ever since. I get about a month a year to find this bird as it migrates through the region in the spring. Because this bird likes the branches at the penthouse level of tree it can be difficult to photograph and harder to find.

When I saw the great picture of the sparrow from spudhead, I remembered this lucky setup. The Robin built its nest high up in a tree but right next to a ridge. The deck in front of my sister-in-laws house was exactly on the same level. She was on vacation while the nest was built and the tree seemed to be perfect for the couple. This was three years ago and unfortunately, they never came back.

Sorry. Fixed it

Hoopoe, a relatively rare visitor to the UK, we get a few each year. This one was close to home, which was nice.

As I walked out my front door over on the bush opposite there was a Great Tit having a feast, I managed to get my camera out just in time.

I’ve never noticed these until I saw someone’s photo recently, but they’re called the Apostlebird because they hang around in gangs of around 12 or so and make a bit of a racquet chatting to each other. I spotted them near the car park of the Parkes Radio Telescope!

I really ought to wipe this lens down. D’oh! Can’t see that when importing straight to an iPhone!

Nice. Yes, sensor needs a clean :)

It's always nice when I see a report of an unusual bird in our area that I actually see it when I go looking for it. That was the case yesterday as a Snowy Egret flew in close to me after waiting about 30 minutes and then came even closer and perched in a tree.

I also got a good shot of a Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher, a bird that has been elusive the past few times I've tried to get a photo.

There are three remaining nests of Great Blue Herons containing chicks (2 nests were lost in storms and a newer nest has a heron sitting on eggs.) Here the almost 7 week old chicks are excited that they are about to be fed.

I haven't seen a hummingbird at my house yet this season but was glad to see one at the nature preserve yesterday as it visited the honeysuckle blossoms.
