We currently have a red footed tortoise that's grown to about 8" across, a fat tailed gecko, and a ball python. The snake is a big girl by ball python standards at just over 4'. She's extremely gentle. My old roommate and I had a zoo in the old days, he had a huge fish tank and I had reptiles, lizards and snakes. the only larger ones were a 3-4' Boa constrictor and a 12' Reticulated python. the Boa was nice the retic not so much, she was beautiful but tough to handle. When I got married I was down to just a corn snake, which was son living in the zoo.
True, I could barely get the rat in the cage, the retic would strike as it dropped in the cage. Still they are among the most beautiful, with their iridescent scales but i would never recommend one to keep at home. My Boa on the other hand would do the normal snake thing and hang in the branch waiting for the mouse to cross in front. Because of that behavior she taught me a lesson in humility. I had for years thought I was smart and quick enough with my reptiles but one day she was letting the mouse hang out too long. One never wants to leave a live rodent in the cage with a snake that does not want to eat so that the rodent does not bite the snake. Well I made the foolish decision to help her find the mouse by putting my hand in the cage to encourage the mouse to run in front of her, before I knew it, i saw and felt her release my hand with a lot of little holes dripping blood. She thought my hand was the mouse but realizing the mistake she made let go before I even knew I had been bitten. It never happened again but I finally understood I was not that fast.Reticulated pythons are a$$holes.
Fabulous. That Hare has incredible ears!
