Last updated: October 16, 2023 / Published: June 18, 2020 by Timothy Mayo - 3 Comments

Sigma has officially announced their new Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary lens for Sony E-mount and L-mount.

Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN for Sony E-mount

The lens will cost $949.00 in the US and £899.00 in the UK (without tripod collar), with first shipments in early July.

An additional tripod collar (Sigma TS-111 Tripod Collar) will be sold separately and cost $107.00 / £139.00.

Sigma also announced a 1.4x (TC-1411) and 2x (TC-2011) teleconverter but sadly only for the L-mount. There was no news on an E-mount version of these teleconverters or if the existing Sony 1.4x and 2x teleconverters would be supoorted.

Full product details and sample images can be found on Sigma’s product page for this lens.

First Impressions and Early Reviews

Dustin Abbott also has a written review up with lots of sample images that you can find here.

It’s certainly going to be interesting to see how this new lens compares with the much more expensive Sony FE 100-400 F4.5-5.6 GM lens.

Everything I’ve seen so far suggests that it is just as good as the Sony 100 -400 GM. I haven’t tried either, personally, but I can’t find a lot of reasons not to go with the Sigma instead.

Hi Billy. It does appear to be a very real alternative to the more expensive Sony 100-400. I’ve bought the Sigma and received it last week already so do plan to compare them side by side soon. The Sony does have the advantage of having the teleconverter support but if you need the extra focal length then the Sony 200-600 is really the better option anyway and much cheaper than the 100-400 + teleconverters.
