Sony FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM Lens Announced – Up to 2.8x Magnification!

The Sony FE 90mm F2.8 G Macro OSS lens was launched way back in March, 2015. Now, some 10 years later we finally get to meet its successor.

The Sony FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS has not only gained 10mm of focal length and the GM badge, it also sees some very nice and welcome improvements over its predecessor.

The new lens costs $1,498 in the US, £1,399 in the UK and €1,599 in Europe. It should start shipping in early November, 2025.

The new macro lens features an improved magnification of 1.4x. This can be increased further to 1.96x by adding Sony’s 1.4x teleconverter or 2.8x by adding the 2x teleconverter.

Its 90mm predecessor features a 1x magnification and does not support the use of teleconverters to extend this further.

Minimum focus distance is just 0.26m (10.2″) in both manual and autofocus modes.

Thankfully the lens retains the same push/pull design of the focus ring to switch between manual and autofocus. It also gains an aperture ring.

The lens is constructed from 17 elements arranged in 13 groups, including two of Sony’s advanced XA and ED elements designed to minimize chromatic aberration. A Nano AR II coating helps suppress flare and ghosting, especially when shooting backlit subjects.

Four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors drive the floating focus group for up to 1.9x faster AF compared to the 90mm lens. This also helps it to keep up with the 120 fps maximum speed of the Sony A9 III.

The lens weights in at 646g (22.8oz) and measures 148mm (5.8″) in length.
