According to Tamron the new lens is the sequel to its 17-28mm F2.8 Di III RXD which was released back in 2019.
The G2 features a slightly wider zoom range and where the older model used a stepper motor, the new lens uses Tamron’s much faster “VXD” linear motors.
The lens body is moisture-resistant and includes a USB-C port that you can use to connect it to Tamron’s lens customization software.
The lens has a 67mm filter, the same as Tamron’s 28-75mm and 70-180mm F2.8 lenses. There’s also a single customizable function button.
The 16-30mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 is constructed from 16 elements in 12 groups and a 9-blade aperture.
At 16mm the minimum focusing distance is 0.19m (7.5″), and at the long end 0.3m (11.8″), giving a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:5.4.
The lens will cost $929.00 in the US, €959.00 in Europe and £849.00 in the UK. It should start shipping in early August, 2025.
